FMA are delighted that the regeneration of the St Michael’s Trading Estate in Bridport, Dorset is set to move forward.
FMA’s involvement included submitting a planning application for a mixed-use redevelopment of the Estate. Proposals include the demolition of low-grade industrial units, construction of 48 new dwellings and 35 apartments, and the regeneration of light industrial accommodation with the provision of new commercial floor space, and the refurbishment of the historic buildings. The proposals offer a dynamic blend of uses that will contribute to the creative and commercial identity of the town.
After years of revisions and consultation, full planning approval has been secured for a comprehensive mixed-use scheme that will provide the following:
- Restore and conserve many of the estate’s historic industrial buildings.
- Deliver modern commercial units in keeping with the area’s heritage.
- Create a riverside walkway for public use.
- Improve public realm through shared spaces and walkways.
- Provide both open market and affordable housing in a central location.
- Sustain and grow employment and training opportunities.
- Consolidate and secure the long-term viability of the trading estate.
The site is of significant heritage interest with many of the buildings dating back more than 150 years, and a blue plaque marking the location where William and Sidney Gale began producing twine in 1877.
