Royal William Yard, Plymouth
The transformation of Grade I Listed Mills Bakery into a mixed-use building featuring apartments, retail units and 33,600ft 2 of new office space
Royal William Yard, Plymouth was designed by Sir John Rennie in 1825 it contains what is likely to be the most important group of historic military buildings in Britain. Mills Bakery forms part of Ferguson Mann’s work at Royal William Yard along with Clarence and Brewhouse, residential and mixed-use conversions.
The intention for the Mills Bakery design was to combine the best of the old with the best of the new, retaining many of the original features of the building and integrating these into modern yet flexible office space. The new and dynamic office accommodation is arranged around a striking full height atrium, with a stunning glazed staircase provides access to the offices on the upper floors.
Residential accommodation is accessed through a separate sequence of entrance and atrium spaces, giving access to a stunning range of loft to studio apartment spaces.
Ferguson Mann’s created designs up to RIBA stage 3, obtaining planning permission and listed building consent for the project.
