Our Architectural Assistant Carys joined the Society for the Protection of Ancient Building (the SPAB) repair course in May.

She spent a week at the Museum of the Home, engaging in site visits and lectures presented by leading building conservation professionals. She gained an in-depth understanding of the repair, maintenance and conservation of old buildings, including SPAB best practice conservation principles, including; construction and performance of traditional buildings, conservation structural engineering, dealing with damp, the care and repair of varying materials, services in historic buildings, and retrofitting sustainably in response to climate change. A visit to the SPAB’s Old House Project, St Andrew’s Chapel, in Kent provided opportunity to observe these conservation principles in practice.

Carys looks forward to applying this new knowledge to current heritage projects in the office and progressing with her conservation accreditation.
