We’re thrilled to announce the opening of the Long Bridge Wing extension to the museum of Barnstaple, North Devon!
FMA started work in 2016 on a two-storey brick extension to the Grade II Listed Victorian Museum to provide more much-needed gallery space. The copper-work is inspired by the existing museum’s decorative elevations and town’s famous Shapland & Petter furniture whilst the new metal-lined staircase evokes the spirit of Victorian engineering.
Project Architect James Crick said of the completion of the project:
“The new wing transforms the wider experience at Barnstaple Museum and provides additional, much needed, gallery space. The new modern entrance hall and facilities are designed to befit a cultural destination, decluttering the existing historic interiors, including the Victorian stairhall. The site for the extension was constrained and so careful massing and creative space planning was required. Approached from the square, the Victorian Atheneum’s significance is respected, with the wing’s extension revealed only from the bridge, or upon entry through the retained façade of the Coach House.”
