A masterplan for an urban village of 475 dwellings, varied commercial and community uses and public open space, set on a brownfield site in a major regeneration area.

Conceived within the hilltown tradition, the proposals are based on strong urban design concepts aimed at place-making and creating a pedestrian-friendly environment.

Drawing inspiration from its context and topography, the design also responds to the surrounding settlement pattern to develop a contemporary interpretation of local building forms within a layout that reflects a relevant sense of locality.

The masterplan sets out a strong environmental agenda with the aim of dwellings achieving an equivalent Ecohomes ‘Excellent’ rating using the Code for Sustainable Homes.

It places an emphasis on reducing car use and proposes other measures such as a sustainable urban drainage system (SUDS), the use of renewable energy and the possibility, given the mix of uses, of a centralised heat and power (CHP) system.
