A new church, sports hall, community café, meeting rooms and youth facility, forming part of a wider area improvement plan to create a new village centre at the heart of the Inns Court estate.
Funded through a Single Regeneration Budget bid to the RDA, the new building is the product of extensive and demanding community consultation, with different groups representing the church, the community centre and the youth services.
The strong needs and criteria of each group almost dictated separate buildings but the result works not just as a series of distinct parts, but also as a coherent and single entity. The strong use of colour, the deliberate and diverse use of building forms, and the different types of security shutters have all led to a building that looks articulated rather than embattled.
Throughout the building every space is naturally lit from at least two directions using clerestory lighting, lanterns, pod rooflights, glazed doors and a whole range of windows. This use of natural light varies the character of each area, and makes the whole building extremely lively and open.
