Feasibility and conservation studies, and preliminary repair works to a Listed pier.
Birnbeck Pier was completed in 1867 by Eugenius Birch. It is one of only five Grade I and II* piers to survive in the country and uniquely joins the mainland to an island and former pleasure ground.
In 2003 Ferguson Mann Architects were commissioned by the Birnbeck Pier Regeneration Trust to prepare a conservation statement and feasibility study to evaluate the importance and vulnerability of the heritage structure. We also investigated options for sustainable reuse of the pier and island.
In 2006 we worked with the new owners Urban Splash on trial repairs to the pier, grant aided by English Heritage. Following the 2008 recession Urban Splash sold the site.
